Introduction
Houseflies may not often bite, but they do carry pathogens and emit digestive juices on our belongings—and us. Getting rid of them without resulting to inorganic pest killers requires a bit of inventiveness, but is completely doable. Here is how to get rid of those pesky flies organically.

Step 1: Keep a Clean House
- The first thing to do is to limit what a house fly lives on: decaying organic matter.
- Keep garbage in covered garbage cans inside and outside
- Store outdoor cans as far away from your house as possible
- Don't let organic materials like animal feces pile up in your yard
- Keep a clean compost heap

Step 2: Seal Up Entry Points
(Creative Commons photo by Hafiz Issadeen)- Flies get into your house through tiny cracks and openings, so before you remove any flies indoors you have to stop them from getting in.
- Check for holes around windows and doors
- Plug up holes with caulking
- Patch or replace holes in window screens

Step 4: Trap or Poison Existing Flies Outside
- If you have swarms of flies outside, you may want to trap them as well.
- For outside use, remove all competing sources of food such as garbage or animal feces
- Set up an inverted cone fly trap such as the Red Top Fly Catcher and bait it with molasses, sugar, fruit or meat

Conclusion
Getting rid of houseflies is a bit of a chore—but a worthwhile one for your health and well-being. You should avoid using insecticides indoors at all costs, and you may want to avoid using them altogether. With a little planning and the use of non-toxic traps, doing away with flies organically isn't really any more difficult than using insecticides.
