Introduction
Just about everyone gets a headache from time to time. Headaches range from mildly irritating to completely debilitating, and they can get in the way of life no matter how strong or weak they may be. The steps below are meant to treat your garden-variety headache. If you suffer from frequent and severe headaches, you should take a visit to a doctor to see of there is a more serious problem. -
Step 1: Ease Tension
Most headaches are caused by stress and tension. While stress can be an everyday part of life, and prove extremely difficult to avoid, there are certain steps you may take to help yourself relax. The following will help ease muscles:- Get a good stretch
- Gently massage the face and head
- Spend extra time massaging the temple and around the eyes
- Go for a walk to release energy
- Lie down for a few minutes with your eyes closed
Step 2: Hydrate
Many Americans are constantly dehydrated, and this can cause or contribute to headaches. If you feel one coming on, drink about two cups of water (more if you are severely dehydrated). Avoid caffeine. It sounds simple, but it actually does work! To help avoid the onset of a headache, keep yourself constantly hydrated by sipping on water throughout the day.Step 3: Medicate
Sometimes it is necessary to take a pain reliever to get rid of a headache. Advil, Excedrin, Tylenol and Allieve are all excellent choices. Take with a full glass of water, and wait up to an hour for the medication to take effect.- If none of the above steps work for your headache, it is a good idea to see a doctor. She or he will be able to diagnose any medical problems, and possibly prescribe a prescription pain killer.
