Many educational facilities limit the types of websites students can access from the Internet, and often MySpace is one of those websites. Educators have mixed views on the value of social networking, so in order to keep students from wasting their school time on sites like MySpace, they often block it. To learn a few tricks on how to get on MySpace at school, check out the information presented in this how to.

Step 1: The Secure Site Trick
(Creative Commons photo by jimwhimpey)- Some firewalls only block out sites they consider non-secure. If the administrator who manages your school's network is more concerned about protecting the computers from viruses and hackers. You can try getting around this block by adding an s to the website address, like this:
- The s will make the firewall believe that the site you are visiting is secure and allow you access.
-
Step 2: Direct IP
- You may be able to access MySpace by directly typing the IP address into your browser. Do not copy and paste the address, physically type it in, and hit enter. To find the IP address for MySpace, find one of the many free online sites like:
- Whatismyipaddress.com
- Hostip.com
- Geobytes.com
-
Step 3: Tunneling Sites
- Through tunneling sites, you can often enter into a website via the back door. The only downside of using a tunneling site, is that often school firewalls will already have these sites blocked. The site Freeproxies.org links to a number of tunneling sites that you may want to try, just on the off chance that they haven't already been blocked. These sites are updated regularly, so look for newer sites, and avoid using the same tunneling sites repeatedly or they too will wind up blocked from the network.

Step 4: MySpace Proxies
- A proxy will allow you to access social networking sites, bypassing the firewall without compromising the network security. There are dozens of proxy sites, so you will want to change proxies frequently or you will wind up getting blocked. Finding proxies is easy. Spend some time before you head to school looking up proxies and write them down to take with you. Here are a few to get you started, but remember, you don't want to rely on using the same proxies repeatedly, as these too will eventually wind up blocked.

Step 5: Using Command Prompt
- Another way to access is through command prompt. From the start menu, access your accessories and click on Command Prompt. This will open a new window. Once this window is open, do the following:
- Type in pingmyspace.com
- Hit enter
- You will get a host of IP addresses.
- Right click on mark
- Copy and paste an IP into your Google browser
- Enter your name and password into the MySpace prompt.
-
Step 6: Browser Reconfiguration
- While most school network administrators will lock this option so you can't change it, some may be more lax, allowing you to get around the browser's limitations with a quick reconfiguration of the settings. If you are using Firefox, you can configure a browser to connect directly to a proxy by changing the settings:
- Go to Tools
- Choose Options
- Click on the Advanced Tab
- Choose Network
- Go to connections and you should be able to reconfigure your settings
- Sometimes you will also come up against a security measure that does not allow cookies, and sites like MySpace require the use of cookies to stay logged in. Reconfiguration can also give you the option of resetting the security and cookies so you won't be continually denied or logged out.

Conclusion
You may be able to get past the school firewall There are no guarantees when it comes to bypassing a firewall. You can try adding an s to the url, to make it a secure site, or typing in the IP directly. Tunneling sites and proxies are another way to get around the firewall, but again, there are no guarantees. Accessing MySpace from Command Prompt is another option you may want to try, as this will give you alternative IPs to use, and if all else fails, see if you can reconfigure the browser settings. If the above methods don't work, you may not be able to get onto MySpace at school. Don't worry, MySpace, and all of your friends will still be there when you get home.
