In 1960, 8 football team owners decided to start a new league to compete with the NFL. The AFL was born. The New York Titans were part of the new league, playing their first game on Sept. 11, 1960 against the Buffalo Bills in a dilapidated arena previously used for playing polo. Only 10, 200 people showed up. In 1963, the Titans moved into Shea Stadium, and changed their names to the "Jets" motivated by the overhead jets arriving and departing from nearby LaGuardia Airport, and because it rhymed with "Mets" with whom they shared the arena. In 1984, they moved in with the New York Giants in the Meadowlands where they became the red-haired step-children. Their fans from New York, especially those from Long Island, couldn't get to New Jersey easily, and their attendance went down.http://www.sportsecyclopedia.com/nfl/nyj/jets.html But that was then, and this is now. The Jets and Giants will be sharing the brand new, state of the art, $1.6 billion football stadium in the New Jersey Meadowlands Complex. And what NY Jet fan wouldn't want to be there in the inaugural season?http://www.newyorkjets.com/?splash=splash
