Step 1: Save Money
The easiest way to earn a dollar is not to spend it. That said, the first thing you should do when you need money is to look at your spending patterns and see if there's anyway you can cut back. Eliminate cable TV? Buy generic instead of name brand products? Stop going out to dinner? Ride a bicycle to work instead of driving? Raise the deductible on your insurance? If there are ways you can cut back, you can pocket the savings. -
Step 2: Earn Money
Short Term Strategies
- Taking on a second job temporarily, such as bartending or substitute teaching can generate extra cash when you need it.
- If you are an hourly worker, see if you can work overtime at your current job.
Longer Term Strategies
- Start a home based business to bring in extra cash.
- Determine what skills you need to get ahead in your line of work and prepare for a promotion.
- Research the job market, and consider switching to a more lucrative line of work.
Step 3: Sell Things You Don't Need
Go through your house, identifying books, clothes and household goods that you are not using. Clothes in excellent shape (the size 6 pants you bought, hoping they'd fit, but never were able to get into?) can be taking to a consignment shop where you might be able to recoup 30% of the purchase price. There are even consignment shops that take household goods. You can also list items on Craiglist, eBay, or Amazon.com, or rent a table at a local weekend flea market. If you live on a highly trafficed street you might want to try having a garage sale.Step 4: Search for Unclaimed Money
Check out your state's unclaimed money site. This can usually be found by going to the Secretary of State's website. The database includes bank accounts, insurance proceeds,, and other assets which have been turned over to the state because the holder of the asset has lost touch with the owner. You may find money that you have forgotten about, or there may be funds that a deceased relative owned that you may be entitled to.
