Introduction
Medicaid programs are run by individual states. This guide is intended to give you an overview of what it takes to be accepted into the Medicaid program. However, it is important to follow all instructions given to by your state.
Step 1: Determine Need
The following factors will determine your eligibility:
- Income
- Age
- Pregnancy
- Children
- Disability
- Special circumstances
Step 2: Apply
Usually, you can apply for Medicaid online at your state government's website. Or if you prefer, you can apply in person. Contact your nearest social/human services department to find out where to go. Be prepared to provide identification, proof of social security number, and proof of income. Other documentation may be necessary also, depending on the requirements of your state.
Step 3: Wait
Chances are, you will not be told whether you qualify immediately. Have patience -- remember that you are dealing with a bureaucracy, and that means that things are probably going to go a bit slowly. If you do not hear anything within a few weeks, call and check on your application. You may be able to find out more about your status at that point.
