Introduction
There are 28 accredited schools of veterinary medicine in the United States. Each gives preference to residents of certain states. This arrangement means that you probably won't apply to many schools, the way aspiring doctors and lawyers can. You'll need a strong application to get into one of the few schools you apply to. -
Step 1: Build a Strong Academic Transcript
- Although high school grades will not appear on your veterinary school application, the courses you take, and the work you do in high school will lay the foundation for your college experience. Take a rigorous course load of math and science at the highest level your school offers.
- Select a college that has a good track record of getting students into veterinary school.
- Make sure you meet all the course requirements for the veterinary school you're planning to apply to.
Step 2: Take the GRE or MCAT
- There is no longer a veterinary school specific standarized test, as the VCAT was abolished several years ago. Some schools require the GRE , while others want you to take the MCAT (Medical College Admissions Test).AVMA: The Road to Becoming a Veterinarian Make sure you know which test the school or schools you'll be applying to accept.
Step 3: Apply to Veterinary School
- Although the odds on you being accepted as an out of state student are low, most schools do accept a small number of out of state students, so you may want to apply to schools in addition to the school that you are eligible for by residence or contract.
When completing your application, you should submit:
- Several (usually 3 are required) letters of recommendation.
- A personal essay that highlights any work experience you've had with animals and that discusses, as specifically as possible, why you want to be a veterinarian, and the specific branch of veterinary medicine you intend to practice.
The final step in the application process will usually be an interview with the school's admissions committee.
