Who doesn't want to get free stuff? If you know what you're doing, it is possible to get food and other items from your local supermarket at no cost. Just read this guide on how to get free groceries to get started.
Prices at the grocery store aren't dropping anytime soon. So why not set out to get some free stuff to make up for high food costs? It takes a bit of effort, but if you put some time into finding deals (and sometimes even requesting free items from manufacturers), you should be able to get some items at no cost to you.
The Number One Way to Get Free Groceries
In this video, you can watch a visual demonstration of what the host calls the "number one way to get free groceries." Here, you can see how a coupon for a dollar off of a common grocery product is paired with a mail-in rebate discount so that the item ends up costing the consumer nothing at all.
Step 1: Get Those Coupons
Take advantage of double and triple coupon deals, and always look out for new coupons to clip. Use these sources to build up a portfolio if coupons on the items that you purchase most at the grocery store as well as special occasion foods and specialty goods:
- The internet: To find the best online coupons, you can often go directly to a grocery store's website and access printable coupons or sign up to have coupons sent to you either by email or snail mail.
- The newspaper (especially the Sunday edition): Both local and national newspapers often come with inserts of advertisements, and many of these contain valuable coupons.
- Yellow pages: Many people leave their phone books sitting on a shelf somewhere untouched, but most yellow pages contain coupons that may be clipped out and used at local businesses.
- Mailers: Instead of throwing out mail that looks like junk, search through it for money saving opportunities.
Remember, using coupons on items already on sale can score you huge savings, and often free groceries.
Step 2: Watch Specials
Sometimes you can receive free groceries just by noticing sales and special deals. For example, if a product comes with a coupon or rebate (possibly for a different product) that is for the same amount as the item you are buying, you are essentially getting the original product at no cost.
Keep an eye on customer rewards programs, as well. Sometimes the reward benefit is equivalent to the price of the item required to receive it. Walmart has been known to run such rewards offers that equal the cost of the product.
In order to get the best deals, you will likely need to be flexible in the brands that you buy. Switching to a certain brand when you have a coupon and/or there is a store special can save you a significant amount of dough, and who knows -- you may even find a new favorite!
Step 3: Write a Letter
If you love a product, write the manufacturer and let them know. Find their email or snail mail address, and write a note telling them what a loyal customer you are. Ask them if you may be able to receive coupons to try some of their other products for free.
Conversely, if you absolutely hate a product, you can do the same thing. Express your dissatisfaction, and you will likely receive a refund or offers for free products. Most companies are eager to please their customer base, and want you to feel positively about their brands.
