In this video, Mahalo fitness expert Heather Lawrence shows you how to do a neck rotation stretch.
Muscles Stretched
Step 1: Stretch Often
Neck rotation stretches can help to gradually loosen the muscles of the neck. These muscles can tighten up quickly, causing neck pain and headaches. By performing a neck rotation stretch regularly, you might be able to increase flexibility and lessen the likelihood that your neck will stiffen up. If you already have pain, stretching the neck gently may help.c Neck rotation stretches can be performed daily.
Step 2: Perform the Stretch
A simple neck rotation stretch can be performed on the floor. Lie down, placing a book under your head (the book should be thick - a phone book, for example). Once you are in position, very slowly rotate your head as far to the right as you can without discomfort. Hold this position for up to 30 seconds. Now repeat the same rotation to the left and hold again. Repeat the stretch up to five times on each side.c
Step 3: Tips for Stretching
Any and all stretching exercises, including neck rotation stretches, should be performed slowly to allow for maximum stretching and to reduce the likelihood of injury.
Remember to breathe slowly and evenly while you are stretching. Breathing increases oxygen to the muscles.c
To prevent neck stiffness, correct your posture. If you are at a computer all day, make sure your monitor is at eye-level.c
If you feel pain while stretching, stop. Don't push too hard—stretch as far as you can without discomfort.
