In this video, Mahalo fitness expert Heather Lawrence show you how to do a lateral neck flexion stretch.
Muscles Stretched
The lateral neck flexion stretch stretches the levator scapulae, scalenes and upper fibres of trapezius. The levator scapulae is positioned at the back and side of the neck, and assists in such movements as shrugging.c The scalene are a group of three muscles, positioned on the side of the neck: scalenus anterior, scalenus medius, and scalenus posterior]] muscles.
The levator scalene assists in such activities as shrugging and carrying heavier objects.c The trapezius is positioned along the back of the neck, and down through the middle of the back, and assists in activities such as shrugging the shoulders and moving the arms overhead.c Performing the lateral neck flexion stretch can help in reliving tightness in the upper back and neck.c
Step 1: Warm Up
In order to reduce the risk of muscle strain or injury during the stretch session, it is recommended that you first begin with a light warm up. Warming up the muscles helps to prepare the muscles for physical activity. To warm up the neck muscles prior to beginning the lateral neck flexion, slowly turn the head left to right, and up and down, reaching a comfortable stretch with each turn. Then, roll the head both clockwise and counter-clockwise, to ensure that all of the muscles in the neck have been warmed up.c
Step 2: Perform the Stretch
Begin the lateral neck flexion stretch by standing with the feet shoulder-length apart, and the head facing straight forward. Slowly lower the head down to one side, moving the ear toward the shoulder. Ensure that the shoulders do not shrug in an attempt to bring the head closer. Once the shoulder is fixed, and you have achieved a comfortable stretch, hold the position for 20 seconds. Repeat on each side of the head, alternating until the series is complete.c c
Step 3: Variations of the Stretch
If you prefer a deeper stretch when performing the lateral neck flexion, you can use your hand to add pressure. To do so, use the hand on the same side as the one you are stretching , and apply a gentle pressure to the opposite side of the head, pushing it down toward the shoulder.c
Tips and Suggestions
- It is better to under stretch the muscle, to prevent muscle strain as a result of over stretching.
- Begin the lateral neck flexion stretch by warming up the neck muscles first.
- Stop any time you feel pain during the stretch. Pain is a sign of muscle strain.
