In this video, Mahalo fitness expert Heather Lawrence shows you how to do a kneeling quad stretch.
Muscles Stretched
The kneeling quad stretch stretches the iliopsoas, rectus femoris , vastus lateralis, vastus intermedius, and vastus medialis muscles. The iliopsoas is made up of three muscles: the psoas major, psoas minor, and iliacus. These muscles extend around the abdomen and down through the thigh. The iliopsoas assists in the flexion and lateral rotation of the hip, and in flexing the torso when the legs are fixed.c
Together, the rectus femoris, vastus lateralis, vastus intermedius, and vastus medialis muscles make up the four parts of the quadriceps muscle. The quadriceps extends down the front and side of the thigh. The rectus femoris assists with the abduction and flexion of the thigh, while the vastus lateralis, vastus intermedius, and vastus medialis assist in the extension of the knee. Performing the kneeling quad stretch provides a deep stretch for the rectus femoris muscle, and can aid in the rehabilitation of thigh strain injuries.c
Step 1: Warm Up Before Stretching
Before beginning the kneeling quad stretch, warm up the quadriceps muscles by performing a series of shallow lunges, holding each lunge for a few seconds. In addition to the lunges, roll the ankles both clockwise and counter-clockwise, to avoid straining the ankle during the stretch. Warming up the muscles prior to stretching helps to prevent injury or muscle strains that can result from improper positioning or over stretching.c
Step 2: Performing the Stretch
Begin the kneeling quad stretch by positioning yourself on the floor, bending down on one knee, with the other leg positioned directly in front of you with the knee bent and foot planted firmly on the floor. Bring the leg behind you up toward your body, grasping the ankle. Lean your body forward, moving from the hips, while continuing to grasp the ankle and pull it in toward the buttocks. When you have achieved a comfortable stretch at the front of the thigh, hold the position for 20 seconds. Continue to alternate between legs, until the stretch series has been completed.c c
Step 3: Finishing the Stretch
Once you have completed the kneeling quad stretch series, finish by cooling down the muscles. A light stretch can be used to help prevent cramping and soreness following the stretch session. To begin, place your feet shoulder-width apart, and slowly bend over reaching toward your toes. After holding the position for several seconds, slowly return to the resting position, focusing on rolling the back and shoulders.c
Tips and Suggestions
- When performing the kneeling quad stretch, it is better to under stretch the muscles as opposed to over stretching it, as over stretching can cause muscle strain.
- Before beginning the stretch, warm the muscles up with a few shallow lunges.
- Pain is an indication of muscle strain. If at any time you feel pain, stop the stretch.
