Muscles Stretched
The back slump stretch stretches the multifidus and erector spinae muscles.c The multifidus muscles are positioned along either of the processes of the vertebrae, extending between the sacrum and the axis, and provides support to the spine.c The multifidus assists with the extension, rotation ,and lateral flexion of the spine, maintaining good posture.c
The erector spinae is a group of muscles and tendons, extending through the lumbar, thoracic, and cervical regions. The erector spinae work in the extension and side-bending, and maintains curvature of the spine.c Performing a back slump stretch can help to ease back pain, and aid in the rehabilitation of back muscles strains and lower back pain.c
Step 1: Warm Up Before Stretching
Before beginning the back slump stretch, warm up the back by doing a short series of slow twists, holding the position for a few seconds, then twisting to the opposite side.c Warming up before performing the stretch will help to prevent any strains or injuries that can occur as a result of overstretching or incorrect positioning.c
Step 2: Performing the Stretch
Begin the back slump stretch by positioning yourself on the floor, on all fours. Be sure that your weight is distributed evenly between your hands and knees. Allow your back to slump toward the floor, focusing on pulling the navel downward. Once you have achieved a comfortable stretch, hold the position for 20 seconds. Return the back to the resting position and repeat the stretch until the series is complete.c c
Step 3: Finishing the Stretch
Once you have completed your back slump stretch series, finish by doing a few cool down stretches. You can repeat the back twists you used to warm up, or bend over and reach toward your toes, holding the position for a few counts. A light cool down will work to prevent cramping in the lower back from the back slump stretches.c
Tips and Suggestions
- When performing the back slump stretch, it is better to under stretch the muscles rather than over stretching.
- Warming up the back muscles before performing the stretch can help to prevent injuries and muscle strains.
- Stretch only as far as you can comfortably go. Never stretch through pain in an attempt to increase flexibility.
