Step 1: Visit the Trustee
The first place to go when seeking emergency assistance in Indiana is to the township trustee. Indiana's hierarchy goes in descending order like this:
- ~State
- ~County
- ~City
- ~Township
The township trustee is the person in charge of disbursing township funds, including what is known as "poor relief" funds. They are able to disburse funds to assist with rent and utilities, not to include luxury utilities such as phone and cable bills.
The trustee may require that the individual fill out an application, provide proof of identity, income and bills as well as proof that they have applied for employment if unemployed.
-
Step 2: Nonprofit and Charitable Organizations
The township trustee is likely to give the individual a referral to a nonprofit group for assistance, such as the Salvation Army, Catholic Charities, a local food bank, United Way or a similar organization.A referral virtually guarantees aid from the nonprofit group without the same qualifying requirements as if you applied for aid without the referral. You can take the referral to the nonprofit group and fills out an application for emergency assistance. They will then have an interview with a case manager who can disburse assistance. This person will coordinate with the township trustee in an attempt to meet your emergency assistance need.
If you require additional emergency assistance, you should ask for a referral to another agency in Indiana that may be able to help them.
-
Step 3: Welfare or Government Assistance
It may be a requirement of the trustee and/or the nonprofit group that you apply for welfare such as Supplemental Nutritional Assistance Program, Temporary Assistance for Needy Families (TANF) and Medicaid. If you meet the criteria for immediate relief in the form of SNAP, supplemental food assistance formally called food stamps. Indiana does allow emergency aid for food under certain situations with expidited services and approval in which food assistance might be granted in less than 24 hours.
