To become a real estate agent in California, you must pass the California Real Estate License Exam. Before you can do this, however, you need to meet certain prerequisites.

1. You must be over 18 years old.
2. You need to show proof of legal residence in the U.S. Proof of California residency is not required.
3. You must provide information of any disciplinary actions taken against you, any previous criminal convictions and any pending criminal charges. A previous criminal record could result in your license being denied or revoked; but so could lying or withholding information on your application.
4. You will need to take three college-level real estate classes. You might be exempt from this requirement if you have a law degree.
