Introduction
Step 1: Determine If You Qualify
Since the Platinum American Express Card comes with no preset spending limit, a high credit rating and solid credit history is required. You'll also need to have a moderately high level of income. If your credit score has taken a recent hit due to other new credit, recent inquiries on your credit, late payments on other accounts or even a divorce, it may be best to improve your score before moving on with the application process.
Step 2: Apply
American Express spends a lot of money attempting to get you to apply for their cards, so the application process is set up to be as simple as possible. You can apply for your Platinum Card online or by phone. Though there is nothing stopping you from receiving a Platinum Card as a new Amex customer, many Platinum customers do start off with other credit cards like the American Express Gold Card or American Express Air Miles Card. If you're not sure you'll be approved, consider applying for and developing a spending history on one of the other Amex cards first.
Step 3: Receive Card
Once you've applied, all you have to do is wait! They may tell you that it could take weeks to process your application, but in practice American Express tends to get back to you in a reasonable period of time. Once your card has arrived, you'll need to call the phone number on the card to activate it for use, then all you have to do is sign the back and you're ready to shop!
