Growing Medical Marijuana in New Mexico
This news report from June of 2009 discusses the growth of medical marijuana on farms now being supported by the state. The report discusses how for two years, since medical marijuana laws were passed in New Mexico, that patients were forced to procure marijuana on their own, or through illegal dealers. Finally, the state has licensed its first non-profit organization to grow medical marijuana, and 11 more organizations have applied for the same right.

- The use of medicinal marijuana in treatment of wasting and terminal illnesses has been approved in 13 of the 50 states. New Mexico has a strict set of regulations governing the dispensation of marijuana to treat illness, including age restrictions and personal history.
Step 1: Qualifying
- New Mexico has a number of requirements patients must meet before receiving a prescription for medical marijuana. Patients will need written certification from their doctor that they have one of the qualifying conditions for treatment:
- Glaucoma
- Multiple Sclerosis
- Cancer
- Neurological disorders
- Epilepsy
- HIV and/or AIDS
- Other medical conditions approve as the Department of Health sees fit
- Patients must be eighteen years of age, though younger patients may be eligible after guardians and caretakers are made thoroughly aware of the risks involved with marijuana.
Step 2: Registering
- Once you have been approved for medicinal marijuana treatment, you will need to register. Registering will grant you full legal protection. Once you register, you will receive a card that is good for one year from the date of issuance.
Step 3: Obtaining Marijuana
- New Mexico offers two options for patients who have been prescribed marijuana:
- Growing your own marijuana
- Patients may grow a three month's supply of their own medicinal marijuana.
- Getting marijuana from a licensed dealer
Step 4: Laws
- In the state of New Mexico, a patient with a valid registration card cannot be persecuted for their use or possession of marijuana.
