How to Follow Someone on Twitter

Twitter users have the ability to "follow" other users and their tweets. By becoming a follower of a user, group, or business, all of their tweets will be displayed on your Twitter feed as they are posted. That means following someone is a great tool to keep up with friends, keep current with business updates, catch the latest buzz on the web, and even eavesdrop on celebrities.

This also means that it is wise to be choosy about who you follow on Twitter. A little research in advance of following someone might clue you in that the person or group posts a lot of off-topic or random posts, or perhaps they tweet so often that it would flood your own feed. Or through your research you may stumble across other friends, groups, or businesses to connect with and follow.

Once you have found someone you want to follow, there are just a few easy steps to complete the process, and they are all outlined below so that within a matter of seconds you can be following someone's Twitter posts.

Step 1: Do a Little Research Before You Follow

When you are considering following someone on Twitter, it's always a good idea to pause and check out their tweet stream before committing to follow them. Some people or groups may post too often for your taste, or some Twitter users may do little more than retweet what other users have already tweeted, creating little to no fresh content. But if you look at a Twitter user's stream and find it interesting, fun, or helpful, then you're ready to add them to lineup of people you follow.

Step 2: How to Follow Someone

There are two basic ways you can start following someone:

  1. Visit the user's profile, and click the "Follow" button located just under their username at the top of the page.
  2. If you see another user's name and avatar anywhere on any Twitter page, you can let your mouse pointer hover right over the profile pic, and details about the user will pop up along with a "follow" button.

Once you find the "follow" button for the right profile, all you have to do is click it once and from then on you will be following them.

Step 3: How to Follow Someone With a Private Twitter Page

Twitter users have a privacy setting option on their profile page that allows them to keep tweets private. If a user checks this box, then they have made it so that they must be able to approve all users who follow their tweets.

If you find that you are unable to find the "follow" button, check the user's profile to see if they don't have a message stating: "I'm only giving updates to friends." After that message there will be an "add" button, which you can click to get special approval to follow that user.

Step 3: Getting Approval to Follow Twitter Users

Twitter users have privacy options within their profiles to make tweets private, and by selecting this option they will opt to approve every Twitter user who would like to follow them. This may mean that select users will not automatically become part of your Twitter stream once you have elected to follow them.
