Although the amount of people using Twitter's microblogging service has increased steadily since the website was launched in 2006, traffic to the site skyrocketed after Oprah Winfrey joined and started using Twitter. This guide is designed to teach you how to follow Oprah on Twitter.
-
Introduction
- On April 17, 2009, the CEO of Twitter, Evan Williams, was a guest on The Oprah Winfrey Show. During the broadcast, host Oprah Winfrey created a Twitter profile and then sent out her first tweet. Shortly after the broadcast, traffic to the Twitter website increased dramatically as current and new users alike logged on and signed up. If you're an Oprah Winfrey fan and want to keep up to date by receiving her Twitter updates, follow the directions below.
Step 1: Join Twitter
- If you already have a Twitter profile, you can move on to the next step. If, however, you have not yet joined Twitter, you'll have to sign up and create your profile.
- Go to the Twitter homepage (www.twitter.com)
- Near the middle of the home page, you'll see a large green box that says: "Get Started—Join!" Click on this box
- Fill in your name, desired username, password and email address in the required fields
- Enter the two CAPTCHA words into the box and then click the green "Create my account" button
- The next screen will ask you if you want to check if your friends from other networks have a Twitter account—you can do this later, so, for now, click on the text that says "skip this step" near the bottom of the page
- The next screen will recommend some people you may want to follow on Twitter. If you want, you can follow all of the people recommended, or you can use the check boxes to remove those people you don't want to receive updates from. When you are ready, click the "Finish" button near the bottom of the screen
- You will then be taken to your Twitter profile
Step 2: Follow Oprah
- Your next step is to find Oprah Winfrey's Twitter profile. You can do so one of two ways.
Option 1: Search for Oprah
- Near the top left of your Twitter home page, you should see a list of six options, one of which is "Find People"—click on this option
- You will be taken to a search page; type "Oprah Winfrey" into the search bar
- There are several Oprah imitators on Twitter, so you'll want to make sure to find the real Oprah. Scroll down until you see the account titled "Oprah / Oprah Winfrey"— it should have at least a million followers
- Click on the "Follow" button to the right of the selected account
Option 2: Go Directly to Oprah's Twitter Page
- Since there are so many false Oprah accounts on Twitter, many of which have similar names, you may find it easier to simply go directly to Oprah's Twitter profile.
- Enter the URL http://twitter.com/Oprah into your address bar
- Under the Oprah's photo near the top left corner of the page, you should see a gray "Follow" button
- Click on the "Follow" button
- Regardless of which of the above methods you use, you should see a message pop up that says, "You are now following Oprah"
Conclusion
- Now that you've signed up to follow Oprah Winfrey on Twitter, you will receive all of her updates. If you're new to Twitter and want to learn more about using the service, see Mahalo's guides on How to Use Twitter and How to Customize Your Twitter Profile.
