Introduction
- Are you concerned about an intruder breaking into your home? Have you thought about enrolling in self defense classes in case this were to happen? Perhaps you have gone a step further and considered purchasing a handgun. If this is the case, it is crucial that you learn how to fire the handgun properly. Whether you are purchasing it for self defense, or merely for recreational purposes, safety is paramount. This guide will provide you with information on how to fire a handgun.
Step 1: Types of Handguns
- There are two basic types of handguns:
- Revolvers. The revolver employs a cylinder, or 'wheel', inside of which are the chambers holding the bullets. The cylinder rotates the bullets around to where the firing pin and the barrel are located.
- Automatics. The automatic handgun employs a vertical loading system in which the bullets are inserted into a spring-loaded 'clip'. When the round is fired, the recoil forces the slide back, expelling the spent round while a new bullet is loaded into the chamber.
Step 2: Prepare to Fire
- Even the smallest guns can be very loud, so it is important to take precautions when you shoot. You should:
- Wear ear protection. This includes either ear plugs or cans.
- Wear protective goggles
- If you are at a shooting range, make sure to familiarize yourself with the rules and regulations. If you are outdoors, make sure you are outside the city limits, and in a safe place. Fields are preferable. You should avoid places with water or lots of rocks, as they both can cause ricochets.
Step 3: Proper Stance
- Before firing a handgun for the first time, it is important that you take up the proper stance. Keep your feet apart about shoulder-width, and step forward with the foot that is opposite the hand you plan on shooting with. Make sure your body is balanced, but with a slight forward lean. Keep the elbow of the hand you plan on shooting with completely straight.
Step 4: Cock the Gun
- Always make sure that the safety of the gun is engaged, unless you are ready to fire. Most handguns have a 'double-action', meaning you can pull the trigger to fire or pull the hammer back until it locks and then pull the trigger to fire. Doing the latter is recommended for accuracy because the gun moves around less at the point of firing.
Step 5: Fire the Gun
- To fire a revolver accurately, pull back the hammer until it locks. For an automatic, pull the slide back and look to see that the bullet goes into the chamber.
- Line your target up in the sights along the top of the handgun. Before you fire, exhale. Gently squeeze the trigger. If you are using an automatic, be careful, as the gun has re-cocked itself and a fresh round is in the chamber. When you are done shooting remember to engage the safety.
Step 6: Finish Shooting
- If you are using a revolver, your empty shells are still inside the gun. Push the release, it will be right where your thumb is, and let the swing-out cylinder come out. Point the barrel upward; push the extractor rod down and the empty rounds will be expelled. If you are using an automatic, your spent rounds will have been ejected during firing, so don't forget to pick them up for reloading or disposal.
