Need to know your IP address? Finding it is simple on most computers. If you wish to connect to the internet or enable others to connect to your computer, you will want to know how to find your IP address.

Introduction
- Every computer connected to the internet is assigned a number called an IP (Internet Protocol) address. This number is unique for every computer, and can be used to identify the location from which it is connecting. You may need to know your IP address if you want to set up an internet connection or connect other people to your computer. You may also need it when troubleshooting. Below are ways to find your IP address on several different systems.

-
Windows XP
- Go to the Windows taskbar and click on the Start button. A menu will pop up.
- Click Run... and a text box will appear.
- Type "cmd" and then click OK to make a command prompt window appear.
- Type "ipconfig/all" in the new window. This will bring up a list of information.
- Look for "IP Address" in the list. The numbers next to it are your address.

Using Outside Sources
- A quick Google search will turn up a slew of websites that may be able to find your address for you. Remember to exercise caution when navigating to unknown sites. Also, you should check with more than one site. If the numbers match, it is likely that they are correct. If you use a router or a proxy (or your internet provider uses one), you will not get an accurate reading from a website.
