How to Find the Surface Area of a Sphere

Surface Area of a Sphere

A sphere is a three-dimensional object. The surface area is a measurement of the area that covers the outside of the sphere. To find the surface area of a sphere, you must first find the radius. It is the distance from the center of the circle to any point on the edge. Then you can plug that number into the formula SA=4π times r squared, where SA is surface area and r is the radius.

For example, the sphere in the figure below has a radius of three. If you plug that into the formula, you get surface area equal to four times pi times three squared. Three squared is nine, and nine times four is 36. You can either multiply out 36 times pi or you can leave it as 36π.
