Introduction
- Doing your taxes isn't just a matter of filling out your 1040 and paying the federal government, you may owe your state as well. Paying your state income tax requires its own set of forms—totally separate from the ones provided to you by the IRS. If you're lucky, you may live in a state that doesn't have a personal income tax. Nevertheless, you should check with your state's department of revenue or taxation to be sure that you're in the clear. If you do owe state income tax, that same department will provide you all the forms you need via their website.
States Without a State Income Tax

- Some states don't require residents to pay a state personal income tax, but be careful. If you run a business, you should be aware that some of these states do charge a corporate income tax, and states like New Hampshire and Tennessee do tax interest and dividends. The best way to know whether you need to file any kind of state-level tax forms is to check with your state's Department of Revenue or Taxation.
