Introduction
- Regardless of whether you're looking to change careers or are just starting out in the workforce, knowing where and how to look for a job can greatly improve your chances of success. Job Hunting can be a time-consuming and daunting task, but making the most of your time and the resources available to you should make it less frustrating and get you on track to finding the job that's right for you.
-
Step 1: Network
- Let everyone in your social circle know that you are looking for a job. That way, if any of your contacts hear of a job opportunity, he or she will hopefully mention it to both you and the person who is looking for an employee. Word of mouth is a powerful tool for both prospective employees and employers: it acts like a personal recommendation and can save the employer time and effort that would have been expended on placing an ad, reviewing resumes and interviewing several potential employees.
-
Step 2: Go Online
(Creative Commons photo by Todd Page)- There are several online resources for Job Hunters, including Monster.com, Yahoo! Hot Jobs and CareerCenter.com (resources are listed below at end of article). Not only can you search job postings, but many sites also allow you to upload your Resume so it is available to prospective Employers. Depending on the site, you may be able to sign up for Job Alerts, through which you will get an email as soon as a job in your area or industry is posted.
-
Step 3: Use Local Resources
- Get copies of your local newspapers and search through the help wanted ads on a regular basis
- Seek out and visit Career Fairs
- If there are any career centers in your area, visit them regularly to browse job postings and make use of other offered resources
- Check community bulletin boards for job postings
- If you are offering a specific service, such as housecleaning or home repairs, consider taking out your own ad in local papers or magazines
-
Step 4: Volunteer
- If you're looking for a job in a certain industry, look for and Volunteer at an organization related to that industry. Not only is this a great way to meet people involved in your field, but it is also a way to further familiarize yourself with the industry and gain valuable experience.
- If your job search is not tailored to a specific field, seek out an organization or Charity that needs volunteers and offer your services. Again, this is a great way to make contacts and any volunteer experience makes an excellent addition to your resume.
-
-
Step 5: Be Proactive
- If you know of a place at which you would like to work, inquire about employment opportunities—even if none are advertised. Find out who the Human Resources director or hiring manager is and introduce yourself to him or her. Provide him or her with a copy of your resume and explain why you want to work for the company. Then check in regularly to inquire whether new openings have presented themselves. By doing so, you will remain fresh in the hiring manager's mind—and may be the first in line to get hired when the company is seeking new employees.
-
Conclusion for How to Find a Job
- The more Resources you make use of during your Job Search, the more likely you are to achieve success. Although Job Hunting can be frustrating, it is important to try not to get discouraged. Keep looking—you may have to be patient, but with some perseverance, you'll find a Job that fulfills your needs.
