Introduction
Losing your job can be very difficult. How will you pay your bills? How will you put food on the table?Well, the government may offer you money to help stay afloat in the event of a job loss, provided you meet the requirements to receive benefits. You will need to file an unemployment claim to find out how much, if any, money you are entitled to. While you won't get as much as you may be used to earning, unemployment benefits can help keep you going until you find another job. -
Step 1: Determine Eligibility
The state has certain requirements for those seeking unemployment benefits. You will only be able to receive money if you meet the following criteria:- You have worked in the state of Virginia
- You are not at fault for losing your job (i.e., you were laid off rather than quitting or being fired for misconduct)
- You are well enough to perform work duties
- You are actively seeking employment
- You are physically able to accept any work offered
- You are available to accept any work offered
Step 2: File
- Go to the Virginia Employment Commission website www.vec.virginia.gov
- Click on I am Unemployed
- Click Unemployed? File a Claim Online
- Choose English or Spanish
- Read the information, then click the link at the bottom of the page to continue
- Fill in all required information
- Wait for your claim to be processed (up to 2 weeks)
Step 3: File Weekly Claims
After your initial claim has been approved, you must continue to file weekly in order to keep receiving your checks. Just go to the same website that you originally applied on, and follow the instructions. Keep filing every week until you have found a new job. The purpose of these claims is to let the government know that you are upholding your end of the bargain--namely, that you are actually out there looking for a job. Unemployment benefits are not intended to be a "free ride," and by checking in weekly you let them know that you are doing your part. How to File for Unemployment in Virginia Links, Powered by Google Powered by Google
