Introduction
Losing your job can be tough. Fortunately, the state may be able to help you cover expenses by issuing weekly checks. The amount you can receive will depend on your salary history. To find out if you may receive unemployment benefits, you will need to go through the application process. Not everyone who applies will be entitled to benefits--read on to find out the qualifications. -
Step 1: Are you Eligible?
Not everyone who is jobless will be eligible for unemployment. You must have held a job in the state of Vermont, and lost it through no fault of your own. This usually means that you cannot have quit, barring unusual circumstances. It also means that you may not have been fired due to your own misconduct or negligence. You must also be physically capable of working, willing to look for work, and available to accept work should it be offered. -
Step 2: Apply
You can apply over the phone. First, gather all necessary information. Then, call 1-877-214-3330 (1-800-650-4152 for TTY) between 8:30am - 4:30pm Monday thru Thursday, or 9:00am - 4:00pm on Friday.- Required Information

Step 3: Send Weekly Claims
Once you are approved, you will need to file a claim with the labor department every week. This can be done over the internet at www.labor.vermont.gov. Just look for Unemployment Insurance on the left side of the page, and click on Claimant Applications. You will need to keep the government filled in on your job search activities, and let them know if your employment status has changed or if you have earned any income that week. -
