Step 1: Do You Qualify for Iowa Unemployment?
The basic Iowa unemployment eligibility requirements are:- you are totally unemployed, or have had your hours reduced.
- You lost your job involuntarily through no fault of your own.
- You have worked in Iowa and earned a minimum amount of wages in work covered by unemployment tax during the past 18 months.
- You are physically and mentally able to work
- You are available for work.
- You are registered for work at your local Iowa Workforce Development Center.
- You are actively seeking work.
Step 2: What You Need to File for Iowa Unemployment
- Your Social Security number
- The name, payroll address, telephone number, and dates employed of your most recent employer;
- Your alien Registration number, if you are not a U.S. citizen.
- If you served on active duty in any branch of the U.S. military during the past 18 months, a DD214.
- If you were a federal employeein the past 18 months, a Standard Form 8, if one was provided to you.
- Names of any dependents
- Weekly gross wages earned by your spouse
Step 3: How to File for Iowa Unemployment
- There are three ways you can apply for unemployment in Iowa.
- File an Iowa unemployment benefit claim online. You'll need to set up an Iowa Workforce Development user account in order to file online.
- File an Iowa unemployment benefit claim in person at an Iowa Workforce Development Center.
- File an Iowa unemployment benefit claim through your employer, if your employer participates in the Iowa program that permits employers to file the initial claim for recently separated employees.
