Wolverine is a conflicted hero with retractable claws of adamantium. He is a strong character with his own flaws and his own skills. He is awesome and his often hard to draw.

Comic book characters can be a challenge for fans and artists to draw because everyone know what they are supposed to look like. If you draw Wolverine and he does not resemble the real Wolverine, your drawing will not be very successful. Knowing how to draw Wolverine properly is important for anyone who wants to draw their favorite comic book character. There are three key parts to drawing Wolverine, drawing his body, drawing his head and face, and accurately drawing his costume. If you can skillfully draw all three of these aspects of Wolverine you will have a drawing which looks good and truly portraits the character of Wolverine. Looking at other people's drawings of Wolverine and practicing drawing Wolverine yourself will help you perfect your skill.

Step 1: Draw the Body

Wolverine is a stocky, heavily muscled character with a very distinctive build. Accurately drawing his body type is very important when drawing a successful Wolverine. Focus on the shape of his body, specifically his arms and muscles. His most well known feature are his adamantium-covered bone claws which he can extend and retract at will. If you are drawing Wolverine you will more than likely want to show his claws. You may also want to show him in an aggressive and threatening stance.

  1. Sketch in the basic outline of Wolverine's entire body, including his head, arms, hands, legs, and feet. You should sketch lightly at first, getting the general shape and not focusing on details. Try drawing in circular shapes for each body part. You will flesh these out later. Begin drawing Wolverine as if he were made of bubbles, drawing bubbles to represent the shapes of his body parts.http://www.dragoart.com/tuts/196/1/1/how-to-draw-wolverine.htm
  2. Wolverine has a broad chest and large arms and legs. He also has huge muscles. Try looking at reference photos of the human body to get the positioning of his arms, legs, and body right.
  3. Sketch in a more precise shape of his body. Begin drawing in his muscles and the curve of his body. His costume is skin tight so all of the rippling muscles and body structure will show through the costume, when you add it later. Draw in a six-pack, bulging arm and leg muscles, and, at this point, draw in his claws. His claws should be long and sharp. You should use clean curved lines to make them appear as flat and metal-like as possible.
  4. Once you have sketched in the body shape and muscle shape, fine tune it and erase any extraneous pencil lines. Make the body shape as clean and precise as you can.

Step 2: Draw the Head and Face

Having a good facial expression and a proportional head will make your Wolverine drawing much more appealing. You may want to draw Wolverine with a threatening look on his face, a scowl, or a growling expression. Wolverine wears a distinctive mask which covers up the majority of his face so getting the visible parts correct is very important.

  1. Sketch in the shape of Wolverine's head. He does not have any hair showing while he wears his costume so his head should be round and relatively smooth. Lightly draw in his mouth and chin.
  2. Draw in the shape of the mask. The mask covers the top of Wolverine's head as well as his eyes and around his cheeks and chin area. Draw the outline of the mask around the face. Sketch in the area where the mask juts out into two curved points. These points begin near his eyes and continue above the mask. They look similar to ears.
  3. Flesh out the facial expression and the mask. Clean up the lines and erase anything that doesn't belong. The face is the most important part of your Wolverine picture as it conveys his emotions and his feelings. Show the muscles in his face and in his neck.http://www.dragoart.com/tuts/196/1/1/how-to-draw-wolverine.htm

Step 3: Draw the Costume

The last step in drawing Wolverine is to draw in his costume and fine tune the drawing. Wolverine's costume is very distinctive. It is yellow, blue, black and red. It is form fitting and shows all of Wolverine's muscles through the fabric. The costume will essentially take the shape of the body quite closely.

  1. Draw in the lines of Wolverine's costume. His body costume will be very close to the shape of the body. You should only need to sketch in the lines of where the costume ends on his arms, neck, and legs.
  2. Sketch in the lines of where his costume is belted around the waist. Draw lines that curve upwards at the top of his thighs to create a separation between the costume and his tights/leggings. Draw in any extra details, such as a markings on the costume itself.
  3. The only part of the costume that will not adhere to the shape of Wolverine's body are his boots. The majority of the boots will follow the line of his feet and legs but the boots will flare out in flame shapes at the top. Draw in the boots and begin drawing flame shapes which flare out from the legs right at the middle of the calf. Each boot flares out into two flame sections of equal size.http://www.drawing-factory.com/how-to-draw-wolverine.html
  4. Go over your entire picture, especially focusing on the costume, and clean it up. Draw with precision and erase anything that doesn't belong. This is the time to draw with force to create solid lines. You can also ink your drawing at this point.

Now that you have drawn Wolverine you can either shade him or color him. Comics are typically colored in the cell shading technique but you can do it however you see fit. The more detailed your shading the more realistic your drawing will look.
