Mahalo drawing expert Ken O'Brien breaks down the character of Pearl Krabs from "SpongeBob SquarePants" into easy-to-draw shapes.
Step 1: Basic Head

1. Draw a large parallelogram for the top front of the face.
2. Draw a long horizontal parallelogram coming from the left side of the first one. It should slant slightly down. This is the right side of her head.
3. Draw another long horizontal parallelogram beneath both of the previous shapes. This should turn the whole drawing into a three-dimensional rectangular cube.
Step 2: Body and Appendages

1. For the bottom of the face, the neck and the top of the body, draw a large triangle pointing downwards. The base of the triangle should be most of the bottom of the left parallelogram.
2. For her right eye, draw an oval in the center of the right side of her head.
3. For her raised pom poms, draw a large circle on each side of her neck.
4. For her arms, connect each pom pom to the triangle around the midpoint. Do this using straight lines. Cap each arm with a sleeve right at the point where it connects to the body.
5. For the neckline of the shirt, draw a downward arc connecting the tops of the sleeves.
Step 3: Erasing and Hair

1. Make the bottom parallelogram and the triangle one continuous shape by erasing lines within this shape.
2. For the base of the ponytail, draw a small circle attached to the top of the back of the head.
3. For the hair, draw a horizontal oval on the back of the top of the head.
4. For the curve of the ponytail, add an upwardly-curving shape coming out of the base of the ponytail.
Step 4: Face Details

1. Inside the eye, draw a circle.
2. For the mouth, draw a sharp, skewed semi-circle where the base of the triangle was. Add a small curved line between the eye and the mouth.
3. For the tongue, add a curved shape inside the mouth. It should be coming from the right side of her mouth.
Step 5: Draw Pearl
Now that you've seen the character breakdown, try drawing Pearl with Ken.
Industry Tip
Breakdowns of characters are very common in the animation industry. On television shows, the artists and animators receive a basic guideline of how to draw the characters. Character dimensions are usually included in the show's pitch bible; these diagrams break each character into units, such as heads for height or squares for length.

Meet Our Expert

Ken O'Brien
Ken studied at Cal Arts with a double major in art and animation, and later worked in the video game industry as a level designer for companies like WayForward Games and Activision, where his credits include Jake Long the American Dragon and Enemy Territory: Quake Wars, among others. O’Brien is a longtime Apple guru, working as a personal instructor of Apple software and products after his career in video games. In 2010 O’Brien started his own art blog, LunchBagDad, which features hand-drawn and painted lunch bags he initially created for his daughters.
