Mahalo art and animation expert Ken O'Brien shows you how to identify the shapes that comprise Patrick Star from "Spongebob Squarepants."
Patrick Star Character Breakdown
- Draw a large triangle to form the general shape of Patrick's body.
- Draw a circle in the middle of the triangle.
- Draw a curved line of action through the triangle and circle.
- Draw a horizon line for the eyes going through the line of action.
- Draw eyes where the horizon line intersects the line of action.
- Draw two rectangles (one vertical and one horizontal) overlapping to form each arm.
- Draw one small triangle for each foot.
- Draw one small oval for each hand.

Meet Our Expert

Ken O'Brien
Ken studied at Cal Arts with a double major in art and animation, and later worked in the video game industry as a level designer for companies like WayForward Games and Activision, where his credits include Jake Long the American Dragon and Enemy Territory: Quake Wars, among others. O’Brien is a longtime Apple guru, working as a personal instructor of Apple software and products after his career in video games. In 2010 O’Brien started his own art blog, LunchBagDad, which features hand-drawn and painted lunch bags he initially created for his daughters.
Drawing Tips from Ken
- Keep in mind that Patrick is essentially a big triangle with a circle.
- Draw with your arm so you have better control and better lines.
- The line of action determines the way the character is facing.
- You can clean up the drawing once you get the basic shapes down.
- Practice drawing hands often.
