Mahalo drawing expert Ken O'Brien breaks down the character of Buttercup from "The Powerpuff Girls" into easy-to-draw shapes.
Step 1: Head, Body and Appendages
1. For Buttercup's head, draw an oval.
2. Draw a square coming down diagonally from the oval. This is your guideline for the body. Draw two curved lines within the square, then three horizontal curved lines within the two curved lines. Erase the square.
3. For the hands, draw two small circles.
4. For the feet, draw two small circles. For the bent right leg, draw an oval over the circle.
5. To make the left leg, draw two curving lines coming up from the left foot circle, stopping at the middle of the right leg.
6. For the right arm, draw two curving lines from the right hand and connect them to the head. Repeat this for the left arm.
Step 2: Hair and Face
1. For the hair flips, draw a curved triangle on both sides of the top of the head.
2. Add a vertical line of action through the center of the face.
3. Use the line of action to find the center of her hairline, then draw a horizontal line inside the head to make the hair. Where the two lines meet, draw a triangle. Erase the horizontal line where it shows up on the triangle.
4. For the eyebrows, draw two long check marks from the ends of the horizontal line. They should slant downwards towards the line of action and then angle upwards towards the triangle.
5. Use a swooping motion to draw the eyes. Draw a large half-circle coming down from each check mark.
6. Use the line of action to find the right spot for the mouth, right between and almost below the eyes. Draw an arch through the line of action to make the mouth.

Meet Our Expert

Ken O'Brien
Ken studied at Cal Arts with a double major in art and animation, and later worked in the video game industry as a level designer for companies like WayForward Games and Activision, where his credits include Jake Long the American Dragon and Enemy Territory: Quake Wars, among others. O’Brien is a longtime Apple guru, working as a personal instructor of Apple software and products after his career in video games. In 2010 O’Brien started his own art blog, LunchBagDad, which features hand-drawn and painted lunch bags he initially created for his daughters.
