Mahalo drawing expert Ken O'Brien breaks down the character of Blossom from "The Powerpuff Girls" into easy-to-draw shapes.
Step 1: Head, Body and Legs
1. For the head, draw an oval.
2. Draw a vertical line of action, or center line, through the center of the character. Since Blossom is flying diagonally, the line should be vertical relative to her rather than to the page.
3. For the body, draw a rectangle coming down from the head. This rectangle starts halfway down the line of action.
4. For the bent right leg, draw an oval pod cutting through the lower right part of her body. Erase the part of the body that you cut through.
5. For the left foot, draw a small circle. For the left leg, draw two straight lines coming up from the circle and meeting the rectangle. Erase the top of the circle.
Step 2: Face, Hair and Arms
1. For the hairline, draw a horizontal line through the head near its top. Draw a triangle where the horizontal line meets the line of action. Draw another triangle on each side of the first, putting some space between each one. Make sure both triangles curve towards the line of action.
2. For the hair bow, draw a sharp triangle on each side of the line of action, projecting up from the top of the head. Connect them near the bottom with a horizontal line.
3. For the eyes, draw two large ovals inside the head, connecting to the hairline, one on each side of the line of action. Inside each oval, draw a smaller oval in the bottom corner closest to the line of action.
4. For the hands, draw two small ovals.
5. For the arms, draw lines to connect the hands to the sides of the head.
6. For the rest of the hair, which hangs down behind the body, draw an oval from the bottom of the head to just above the left foot. This should connect on both sides of the foot. Draw two loops from the top of the oval on body sides of the body. These should connect to the sides of the oval. Erase the outer edges of the oval connected within each loop.

Meet Our Expert

Ken O'Brien
Ken studied at Cal Arts with a double major in art and animation, and later worked in the video game industry as a level designer for companies like WayForward Games and Activision, where his credits include Jake Long the American Dragon and Enemy Territory: Quake Wars, among others. O’Brien is a longtime Apple guru, working as a personal instructor of Apple software and products after his career in video games. In 2010 O’Brien started his own art blog, LunchBagDad, which features hand-drawn and painted lunch bags he initially created for his daughters.
