Introduction
- In Japan, the word pronounced as anime refers to all animations in Japan and outside. Outside of Japan; however; anime has come to mean a certain Japanese style of animation, created by Japanese artists. Anime does not have a specific definition and there are sometimes disagreements on which works can be considered anime. While anime works share specific characteristics, not all of them will follow the traditional style of anime in all aspects. This page will take you through the steps of drawing traditional anime-style images.
Step 1: Characters
- The main thing that defines anime is the appearance of the characters. Anime can picture many different scenarios, topics, themes and locations, but most anime characters share similar characteristics. Not all of them will conform to all typical features as there is always room for creativity in art.
- Anime characters often have exaggerated features and dramatic face expressions.
- They often have large eyes.
- They are often also pictured with large hair.
- Many anima characters have distorted body proportions such as a large head or an unusually tall body. Male heroes in anime are sometimes pictured with exaggerated body proportions such as large arms and legs.
- Many have egg shaped faces.
- They often have creative and colorful hairstyles.
Step 2: Drawing
- It's time to start drawing.
- Draw the face first; for a traditional style, use an egg shaped face.
- Sketch a cross onto the face to use as a supporting line (it will later be erased). The intersection on the egg will depend party on to which direction the character is facing and looking.
- Add hair.
- Draw the eyes. They should be at a height slightly above the intersection of the cross.
- Add the nose on the intersection of the cross.
- Add the mouth.
- Draw the body of the character.
- Draw the scene.
Step 3: Techniques
- There are a variety of techniques that are helpful in any type of drawing.
- Using professional drawing tools, such as pens and sketch paper, will make your drawing last longer and can provide better results, but will be more expensive.
- Make sure you have an eraser at hand.
- Use supporting lines and shapes when drawing. These are lightly drawn and later erased. It's much easier to draw if you use blocks, circles, lines and other supporting shapes.
