How to Donate Your Eggs
Dr. John Jain, a reproductive endocrinologist, discusses how to donate your eggs. This video is part of a larger series devoted to fertility/pregnancy/parenting, all of which are available to view for free on the Mahalo.com channel of YouTube.
By learning how to donate your eggs, you can help couples who are unable to conceive a child naturally. Before making the decision to donate, you must consider the psychological effects this may have. You must closely examine your reasons for wanting to participate in donation.
In a study conducted by Nancy Kenney, Ph.D. and Michelle McGowan, Ph.D., the long term emotional and psychological effects of egg donation were examined and reported by the medical journal, Fertility and Sterility. The study included 80 women who had donated their eggs to be used by infertile couples to conceive. After two years, approximately two-thirds of the women still remained positive about their decision to donate. The remaining third either experienced negative feelings or neutral feelings regarding their decision.http://www.cbsnews.com/stories/2008/12/30/health/webmd/main4691689.shtml
Step 1: Choose an Agency
Many egg donors are retained by donation agencies who match egg donors with couples who are experiencing infertility. The agency acts as a matching service. Once a couple has decided to use a donor, they are referred by their physician to the agency. The agency then offers the couple possible donation choices based upon their preferences. Over 90 percent of egg donors are anonymous and couples choose the donor egg based on the information that is found in the donor's profile. This may include the donor's medical or family history that was obtained during the interview process with the donor.http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=C-lrHXJYEus
Step 2: Meet the Qualifications
There may be qualifications that are required to be met before you can become an egg donor. This may include being within a specific age range, which ideally is under the age of 30. You may also have to meet health requirements and be free from serious medical conditions. There may be other factors that could play a role in your eligibility to donate your eggs. Skill, intelligence and ethnic background are all characteristics that are looked at when an agency or couple are choosing to purchase your egg. The average compensation that an egg donor receives in Los Angeles ranges from $6,000 to $7,000. http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=C-lrHXJYEus
Step 3: Prepare for Egg Donation
Once the decision has been made, you will be referred to a fertility doctor so that you may begin the donation process. You will need to undergo a series of tests as required by the Federal Drug Administration. Several weeks of injections will also be needed to help your body to produce multiple eggs. You will then have a procedure to remove the eggs. Once they have been removed, they will then become part of the in vitro fertilization process for the infertile couple. http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=C-lrHXJYEus
