- Facebook is the most popular social networking website, with over 200 million active users. Thanks to its high traffic, Facebook has been able to promote various charity causes and to allow its users to donate to a number of non-profit organizations. The How to Donate on Facebook guide will show you how to make donations on the site.
Introduction
- Because its power as a popular social networking site, Facebook has become able to expose its members to many opportunities to provide support for charities. Donating via Facebook's "Causes" page is a safe and easy way to ensure that your dollars are going directly to non-profits, both big and small.
Step 1: Go to Facebook.com
- The easiest way to access Facebook is to enter its specific URL: www.facebook.com. You can also find it by entering "facebook" into a search engine and clicking on the first link.
Step 2: Enter Your Login Information
- The front page of Facebook.com has a dark blue bar at the top of the screen. On the right side of the bar are two dialog boxes. On the left dialog box, type in the e-mail address that you used to sign up for the account. On the left, enter the password that you created when creating your membership, then click the "Login" button.
Step 3: Access "Causes"
- Once you have logged in, you will find a "Search" box on the upper right hand of the screen. Type in the word "causes" and hit "enter" on your computer. The first result link will be called "Causes." Click on that link.
Step 4: Install "Causes"
- The "Causes" page tells a little about the application and pictures a sample Cause page, such as "Feed Hungry Children in Haiti." Click on the blue "Go to Application" link to the right of that picture. The next page will ask you if you wish to allow access to your profile information. If you agree to the terms, click "Allow."
Step 5: Find a Cause
- Near the top of the Causes page is a blue link that reads "Find Causes." Mouse over that link, you will find three options: "Browse Causes," "Friends' Causes" and "Start a Cause." If you click on "Browse Causes," you will reach a page that displays Facebook's top 5 causes, as well as a list of alternate causes by category. There are 10 total categories:
- Animals
- Arts & Culture
- Education
- Environment
- Health
- Human Services
- International
- Political Campaigns
- Public Advocacy
- Religion
You can also look for specific causes using the "Search" box near the top of the page. For example, a search for "breast cancer" will result in a page that lists all the non-profit breast cancer advocacy groups. The groups will be listed in descending order of members, and the groups with the highest number of members will be listed at the top. Click on the link for the group to find more information about their mission.
Step 6: Donate
- On the specific group's page, if you look under the group's logo, you will find a "Donate" link. Clicking on that link will take you to a page that asks for the amount of your donation, the frequency of the donation (either once or on a recurring monthly basis) and your credit card information. If you are so inclined, you can also add a "tip" to help defray Facebook's costs in running the Causes platform.
