How to Do a Three-Count Riff Walk (Slams) While Tap Dancing

Step-by-Step Instructions

A three-count riff walk is similar to a regular three-count riff because it contains three sounds. However, it is different because it propels you forward with each step. This move goes by different names and is sometimes called a slam or a slurp.

1. Toe dig: Start off by taking the ball of one foot and digging it beside the other foot.

2. Heel dig: Dig your heel down and forward, which will bring your toe up naturally.

3. Toe drop: Drop your toe straight down. This will switch your weight onto the ball of your foot so you can now pick up the other foot to repeat the step on the other side.

Move forward each time you switch your weight.

Tips

  • To speed up the three-count riff walk, loosen up your ankles and make your movements smaller.
  • You can go in a circle by performing the heel dig to the side instead of straight down. Rotate your foot on the heel and drop your toe down on the side.
