Introduction
- Public speaking is a skill that can be developed by listening to great orators, and practicing your skills. Write your speech with its delivery in mind, practice it, care for your voice, make eye contact, and watch your pace while you're speaking.
Step 1: Listen to Great Speeches
- One of the best way to learn oratory is to watch, and listen to, great speeches. Observe how speakers use their voice, and their body, to effectively deliver their message.
Step 2: Write Your Speech
- When writing your speech, remember that you're writing for an audience who will be listening, not reading. Structure your language accordingly. Read your work aloud while writing, making notes to yourself of things you want to remember while speaking, such as places to pause, add vocal emphasis, or raise your voice.
Step 3: Practice
- Practice delivering your speech in front of a mirror. Deliver it to friends and family for feedback. Try to have it memorized, even if you'll have your notes available during the presentation.
Step 4: Care for Your Voice
- Your voice is an important tool in delivering a speech. Try to avoid throat irritants, such as cigarettes, before a speech, and drink plenty of water to keep your throat hydrated. Don't spend the night before the speech screaming loudly at a sporting event; you don't want to risk being hoarse on the big day.
Step 5: Make Eye Contact
- While speaking, you want to establish a connection with your audience. One of the best ways to do this is by making eye contact with people in the audience. Identify a few friendly faces, and speak directly to them.
Step 6: Slow Down
- Don't speak too quickly, as it will reduce your effectiveness. Nerves make some people speed up. Relax, take a deep breath, and pace yourself.
Conclusion
- Public speaking doesn't need to be nerve racking. Prepare your speech well, practice, and use the tips provided and you'll be sure to give a polished professional presentation.
