Step 1: Plan Your Fishing Trip
- Before heading out to sea, you should do some preliminary research on deep sea fishing to determine what type of trip you want to take. Because deep sea fishing can be dangerous, it is not recommended that beginners go at it alone. You will need to fish with an experienced fisherman and someone that knows how to captain a boat. If you do not already have a friend or family member that can assist you with this, then you need to make arrangements through a charter company. You can:
- Charter a private boat
- Go on a general fishing charter
- Private charters are more expensive, but may be ideal if you are going with a group of people. You will be able to choose between several types of trips depending on which charter company you use. Most companies charter half-day or full-day trips, but may also offer three and four day excursions as well. Private charters are more flexible. Make sure you make reservations ahead of time, otherwise the company may be booked by the time you arrive.

Step 2: Make Preparations For Your Trip
- Once you have decided where you will be fishing and what charter you will be taking, you can begin preparing for the trip. Make sure you ask the charter company what supplies they will be providing as part of the package deal cost. Some places, for example, will provide you bait, tackle and fishing rods, while others may rent it out to you for an additional cost. Even if fishing rods are supplied by the company, however, you may still bring your own.You should also bring:
- Sunblock
- Dramamine in case you become seasick
- Jacket or windbreaker in case of bad weather
- Long sleeve shirt or sweatshirt in case it becomes cold
- Hat
- Sunglasses
- Cooler with drinks
- First aid kit
- Towels
- Comfortable shoes you don't mind getting dirty
- Snacks

Step 4: Begin Fishing
- Once you are out at sea, start fishing! Your captain or guide will give you some help and pointers if necessary, as well as help you if your line gets tangled, but this is your chance to shine. With some skill, and maybe a little luck, you will be able to make use of the fish cleaning services when you arrive back at the marina.
