Introduction
When you think of Thanksgiving, what do you picture? Aside from great holiday feasts, Thanksgiving is filled with the warmth and spice of the autumn season. When it comes to decorating your living room for the holiday, inspiration can be found from the colors outside, the food that we eat during our Thanksgiving meal and from the history of the holiday itself. With a few simple steps, you will be on your way to having a decorated living room to celebrate Thanksgiving.
Step 1: Remove All Summer or Other Holiday Decor
Before you can begin decorating for Thanksgiving or autumn, you should remove any decor that relates to the summer season as well as any decorations from Halloween. Summertime decorations can include cool colors, such as blues and greens. It may also include anything that is related to the beach or plants that are rich in bright colors (like pink or purple).
Halloween decorations should also be removed. However, if you have fake pumpkins or hay laying around, you can keep them out.
Step 2: Warm Up Your Space with Colors
Autumn is full of warm, natural and dramatic colors. Harvest colors, such as brilliant reds, pumpkin oranges, muted yellows, pear golds, earthy browns and olive greens, will really bring in the changing of the seasons. Inspiration can be found in falling autumn leaves, pumpkins, spices (such as cinnamon), berries, nuts, fall fruits and dried grasses.
Balance out your living room with a simple contrast of autumn hues. Do not feel the need to overdo it. Only try to use around two to three colors within the room for larger accents and use other colors for smaller accents. Try different shades of the same color, such as with red, you can use cranberry and burgundy.
Step 3: Leaves, Flowers and Wreaths
The addition of fall foliage, flowers and wreaths can be an easy way to decorate for Thanksgiving. Any type of flower can be used as long as it embraces the colors of the season. Wreaths could be made up of pinecones, leaves or small plastic apples or pumpkins. Autumn leaves are another great way to accent your living room during Thanksgiving. Garland can be made out of either fake or real leaves to accent a banister, shelf or window sill.
Step 4: Accents and Accessories
To add more warmth to your living room, you can add throw pillows, blankets and rugs that all include colors of fall or fall themes (leaves, pumpkins, etc.). The same will go for paintings that you can hang on your wall or set up on a shelf.
Create centerpieces for small tables set in your living room. The centerpieces can include acorns, small pumpkins, red and orange colored flowers, candles and pinecones. You can also create a cornucopia as a table centerpiece or to place on a shelf.
Many craft stores will sell miniature turkey or pilgrim figures that you can place on shelves or tables to celebrate the holiday.
Step 5: Add Fall Scents
Nothing says Thanksgiving like the brilliant autumn scents that surround us during the season. You can bring all of the wonderful scents into your living room through the use of candles or potpourri. Popular scents for Thanksgiving are cinnamon, pumpkin, apple, vanilla, [spiced cranberry]] and woodsy aromas, such as oak. You can purchase jar or pillar candles or place potpourri in a shallow bowl to bring in some seasonal scents.
