How to Decorate Santa Cookies

Learning how to decorate Santa cookies with icing and sprinkles can add an extra flair to your holiday baking. Santa cookies can be enhanced by using a combination of royal icing and sprinkles for added color and dimension. Decorating Santa cookies is not difficult, but you will need all of your supplies ready and available prior to starting and sufficient time to allow your icing to dry between sections to prevent the different colors from bleeding together.

These Santa cookie decorations can be a suitable project to perform with children as no sharp or hot objects are needed. Consider customizing your Santa cookie decorations based on your personal color preferences or baking decorations you already have on hand.http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=Ahe0g0pyv-M

Step 1: Gather Ingredients

Cut sugar cookies into the basic shape of Santa using a cookie cutter and bake them. You will need to make royal icing prior to decorating your cookies, or purchase pre-make icing in white, flesh color and red. You will also need a plastic bag that you can use for a piping bag, scissors, decorative sugar balls and a sprinkle mix.http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=Ahe0g0pyv-M

Step 2: Create Santa's Beard and Face

Place royal icing into a zip-top plastic bag by color. Cut a small edge off of your bag to create a piping bag. Outline Santa's beard in white royal icing and then fill in the entire beard area with white icing. Allow the icing to set for approximately 20 minutes. Take your flesh-colored icing and fill in the facial portion of the cookie. Take two round sprinkles and place in the icing for eyes and use a large round sugar ball in red for the nose. Allow the icing to set completely.http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=Ahe0g0pyv-M

Step 3: Create Santa's Hat

Trace around the ball on Santa's hat with white icing, then fill in the entire ball with white icing. Place some small white sugar sprinkles in the icing on the hat, then allow it to set for about 20 minutes. Fill in the rest of Santa's hat with red icing. After all of your icing and decorations are complete, allow your cookie to dry completely for about an hour. Your cookie is then ready to be enjoyed.http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=Ahe0g0pyv-M
