How to Dance the Box of the Fox Trot
This video features John Cassese (also known as the Dance Doctor) and his dance partner, Janelle, teaching viewers how to dance the box step of the foxtrot. He first explains what he and his partner are going to do and what steps the male and female should take. He then performs the dance, while counting, so that the viewers can see how the dance is done. At the end of the video, links are provided leading to other videos teaching viewers about how to dance other dances.
Step 1: Learn the Foxtrot Timing
Before you start learning or steps or dancing, you need to learn the count and timing of the foxtrot dance. This is essential because if you are off the timing, then the entire dance will be off.
The foxtrot timing is 4/4 (said as "four four"). For purposes of this part of the dance (the box), there will be "quick" steps and "slow" steps. Each "slow" step gets two beats and each "quick" step gets one beat. Practice saying the count: one, two, three, four, five, six, seven, eight, and repeat.http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=ME2mJeKQsnU&feature=channel
Step 2: Perform the Box
Now that you've learned the timing of the foxtrot dance, you can start learning the steps. The first step of the entire foxtrot dance is the box. There are different steps for males and females, but the females mirror the male's movements.http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=ME2mJeKQsnU&feature=channel
Ladies go back with the right foot and men go forward with left foot. Go to the side with the opposite foot and then come together. Now, ladies go forward with left foot, and men go back with right foot and then step side with opposite foot and come to where you originally started from. Then, do it in closed position (or dance position). Females' feet are together and the men step forward with their right foot in between the female’s feet. Men then close their left foot to the right. Do the same step pattern. Slow, quick quick, slow, quick quick. The side steps are always the “quick” steps, and stepping forward or backwards are the “slow” steps.http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=ME2mJeKQsnU&feature=channel
Step 3: Rotate the Box
Once you've completed the box, you now need to rotate the box. This for the males only as the females always mirror the male's movements. Don't forget the count: 4/4. Also, don't forget that the "slow" steps get two beats and the "quick" steps get one beat. Rotating the box is simple, all the male does is start to gradually rotate to the left and they've done it.http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=ME2mJeKQsnU&feature=channel
