Introduction
The Argentine tango is a dance and musical genre. It originated in Argentina and is often confused with the ballroom tango. The dance consists of a variety of styles from different regions including Europe and North America. The Argentine tango is danced in an embrace which can be open or closed and feet are kept close to the floor with legs brushing as you walk. -
The Basics
The Argentine tango has no set steps. This makes it very easy to learn. The dance is completely improvised, with the lead combining steps that work with the music. There are some basic rules to follow though:- Listen to the beat of the music and move in time with it.
- If you are male place your right hand behind your partners back.
- If you are female place your left hand on your partners upper arm.
- The Argentine tango is danced around the floor counter-clockwise, with the dancers keeping to the outside of the floor and following the line of dance.
The Music
If you want to dance the Argentine tango well you need to be aware of the music. When you listen you should hear the rhythm ONE-two-THREE-four (the one and three being the major beats of the music). Just like the dance itself tango music varies. There are both traditional and non-traditional types and both can be played with traditional or non-traditional instruments. Many people even dance the Argentine tango to non-tango music. You can find examples of tango music online and it is good to listen to it beforehand, to get a feel for the dance.Walking
Argentine tango walking is very basic. This is what make the dance so simple. Depending on the dancer however it can become quite complex and beautiful. Just move to the music, stepping in on each major beat (one and three). Remember to walk counter-clockwise around the floor following the line of dance. Try to follow the line of dance unless another couple makes it too dangerous and try to add more complexity to your walk as you progress. The Embrace
The Argentine tango is a very intense dance therefore the embrace is very important. Dancers tend to dance very close together - their faces almost touching - with their arms around each other the entire dance. The man pulls his partner towards him with his right hand behind her back. The women places her left hand on his upper arm and pushes against him. Your embrace should be gentle but firm. Throughout the dance maintain these positions and do not let your arms loosen.
