Introduction
Cutting down a Christmas tree is a fun yearly tradition that is enjoyed by families throughout North America. Visiting a tree farm or even venturing into you own acreage to locate the perfect Christmas tree is an exciting way to mark the beginning of the holiday season. This guide will show you step-by-step how to cut down a Christmas tree.To cut down a Christmas Tree, you will need:
- A Saw
- Boots, preferably safety boots
- Thick work gloves
Step 1: Choose a Tree
- When searching for a Christmas Tree to cut, some people bring small pieces of brightly colored fabric. When a tree is found, the person will mark the top of the tree by tying the fabric around it. This allows the person to continue searching while knowing that the selected tree can be easily found.
- Follow the steps on How to Buy a Christmas Tree to select the best type and size of tree.
- Before cutting a tree down, ensure that the tree is exactly the one you want. Check for a lot of brown or dead needles, holes in the branches and don't forget to ask your spouse for his or her opinion before starting to cut.
Step 2: Cut the Tree Down
- Position yourself under the tree and move away the branches.
- Lean slightly against the tree so that your weight will ensure the tree falls in the correct direction.
- Cut as close to the base as possible. You will make a second cut in step 3 to adjust the height.
- If you're using a chain saw (featured video), wrap the chain around the base of the trunk and begin to pull in alternate directions.
- If you're using a traditional saw, make a single deep cut in 1 direction first. Then, carefully align your saw to follow that groove.
- Make light even strokes. While applying pressure on the saw may feel like the best way to cut the tree, allowing the saw to do it's job and cut evenly is preferable.
- Once the tree starts to fall, carefully and quickly finish the cut. Don't push the tree over while part of the trunk is still attached. This will splinter the wood and shorten the life of your tree.
Step 3: Take Your Christmas Tree Home
- Once the tree is completely cut, lower it carefully to the ground.
- Carefully evaluate the bottom of the tree. Remove branches from the bottom of the trunk so that the tree will fit in your Christmas Tree Stand at home.
- Form a loop and tie a length of rope around a sturdy branch near the middle of the tree.
- Using the rope as a handle, drag the tree to your vehicle for your successful ride home.
