Fun Fur is a specialty eyelash yarn manufactured by the fiber company, Lion Brand.http://www.lionbrand.com/yarns/funFur.htm It is classified as a bulky weight yarn despite its wispy thin appearance. It is usually used to knit scarves that appear to be furry. However, this delicate fiber can work just as well as a crochet yarn. The benefit of working with such a yarn is that you can make a finished project much faster than smaller yarns. In this how to crochet a fuzzy Fun Fur scarf tutorial, you learn how to make a variety of scarves from easy to advanced.

This how to article contains one main filet crochet pattern and several variations. Most of the patterns can be easily replicated by beginners. However, there is one advanced color change pattern included for those who want a challenge. You will need the following supplies to finish this project: size K crochet hook, 2 skeins of Lion Brand Fun Fur and a yarn needle. Most of the patterns on this page take 45 minutes to 1 hour to complete.

First, you are taught how to make a fuzzy scarf that has a lacy appearance with added depth created by filet crochet techniques. You make a checkerboard pattern with the open and closed mesh stitches. Beyond the main pattern, the tutorial demonstrates how to make a simple single crochet, double color, loop and 2-color stripe scarf. The stripe pattern is for advanced crocheters.

Step 1: Basic Elements

  • Slip Knot:
  1. Create a loop with the yarn and hold the tail behind it.
  2. Place the hook through the loop on the right side. Take it under the bar made by the tail end. Bring it through the loop on the left side.
  3. Pull the tail and tighten the loop. Leave a 6 inch tail.
  • Straight Chain:
  1. Form a slip knot on the crochet hook.
  2. Place the hook in your right hand then yarn over the hook.
  3. Take it through to make your first loop.
  4. Continue this same process until you have the loops that you need. Remember that you do not count the loop on the hook.
  • Slip Stitch:
  1. Take the hook through the stitch.
  2. Yarn over the crochet hook like normal. Take up a loop through the stitch and loop on the hook.
  • Single Crochet:
  1. Chain 1 to start the row. This turning chain does not count as a stitch.
  2. To make a single crochet stitch, insert the hook through the stitch in the fabric.
  3. Wrap your yarn over the hook.
  4. Bring up a loop and yarn over once again.
  5. Pull the loop through both loops on the hook. You have made a single crochet stitch.
  • Double Crochet:
  1. Chain 3 at the beginning of a new row. This turning chain does count as the first double crochet stitch.
  2. Wrap the yarn over and place the hook through a stitch.
  3. Once again, yarn over the crochet hook and take up a loop.
  4. Wrap your yarn over and bring that loop through the first 2 loops on the hook.
  5. Wrap your yarn over again then pull it through the 2 loops on the hook. This creates a double crochet stitch.

Step 2: Filet Crochet Scarf

The gauge dimensions are 4 inches wide by 4 inches tall. A size K needle and Fun Fur yarn were used to create the gauge.

  • Gauge:
  • Make a chain with 12 loops in black.
  • Row 1: Create a single crochet in the second chain loop from the hook. Continue making single crochet stitches in each remaining loop of the chain. Chain 1 and turn.
  • Row 2 - 14: Make single crochets in each single crochet stitch across the row. Chain 1 and turn.
  • Instructions:

Chain 41.

  • Row 1: Make a single crochet into the second chain from the hook. Single crochet across the row.
  • Row 2: Chain 3 (which stands for the first double crochet in the row). Make 1 double crochet in the next 3 stitches. Chain 2. Sequence: Create one double crochet in the next 4 stitches. Chain 2. Repeat the sequence across the row.
  • Row 3: Chain 3 (which stands for first double crochet in the row). Create 2 double crochet stitches in the chain-2 space. Then, double crochet into the next double crochet stitch. Chain 2. Sequence: Make 1 double crochet in the next double crochet stitch. Form 2 double crochet stitches in the chain-2 space. Then, double crochet into the next double crochet stitch. Chain 2. Repeat the sequence across the row.
  • Row 4: Chain 5 (which stands for first double crochet and a chain 2). Make 1 double crochet in the next double crochet stitch. Form 2 double crochet stitches in the chain-2 space. Then, double crochet into the next double crochet stitch. Chain 2. Sequence: Make 1 double crochet in the next double crochet stitch. Form 2 double crochet stitches in the chain-2 space. Then, double crochet into the next double crochet stitch. Repeat the sequence across the row.
  • Repeat rows 3 and 4 until you reach the length that you want. Add one round of single crochet stitches around as follows: 1 single crochet per double crochet stitch and 2 single crochets per chain-2 space. Weave in all ends.

Step 3: Fun Fur Scarf Variations

  • Simplest Scarf:

The simplest scarf that you can make is one made up entirely of single crochet or double crochet stitches. If you decide to make a single crochet one, make a chain with 41 loops then single crochet in the second loop from the hook. Form single crochet stitches across the remaining loops. Once you turn the piece, make a chain 1 and single crochet in every stitch across the row. Repeat this until you reach the desired length.

To make a double crochet version, make a chain with 43 loops then double crochet into the fourth loop from the hook. Make double crochet stitches across the row. Then, turn the piece and create a chain 3. Make a double crochet in the next stitch then go across the remaining stitches with double crochets.

  • Double Color: A variant of the simplest scarf is to crochet half way with one color then add a different color and finish off the rest of the length. To make a simple color addition, make your single crochet or double crochet like normal. However, stop before the last yarn over. Instead of wrapping your old color over the needle, yarn over with the new color and continue with your stitches.
  • Loop Scarf: The loop stitch works very well with this type of bulky yarn. To make it, insert your crochet hook into the stitch. Then, wrap the yarn around your left index finger twice, catch up both of the loops on your finger and pull through. You should have 3 loops on the hook and your finger still connected. Take your finger out of the loop. Yarn over and pull through all 3 loops to secure the stitch. Try alternating loop rows with single crochet rows.
  • Stripe (Advanced): This technique mimics the stranding of motifs in intarsia knitting. You need to have one skein each of red and black Fun Fur. If you work on your own patterns, remember that you must have a separate bobbin of yarn per color block. The difficult part of this process in crocheting with your non-dominant hand. You will crochet to the left with your right hand and to the right with your left hand. It does take a decent amount of practice to do this well.
  • Instructions:

Chain 37 in black.

  • Row 1: Single crochet into the second chain from the hook. Make 16 single crochet stitches across the row. Now, it is time to add your second color. Make a single crochet in black in the next stitch but use the red yarn for the last yarn over and pull through. Continue making single crochets across the row. Chain 1. Do not turn the fabric.
  • Row 2: Switch the hook to your left hand and single crochet across in red for 17 stitches. Now, you need to swap colors in the next stitch. To do this, make a red single crochet but don't finish the last step. Hold up your black yarn with the red yarn trapped between it and the fabric then yarn over with the black thread and pull through. Continue across with black single crochet stitches. Chain 1. Do not turn.
  • Row 3: Switch the hook back to your right hand and single crochet across in black for 17 stitches. Swap colors in the next stitch. Continue across with red single crochet stitches. Chain 1. Do not turn.
  • Repeat rows 2 and 3 until you reach the length that you want.
