Introduction
The amount of time needed to create a video will vary widely depending on the depth of the subject matter you're covering. Since CamStudio has a user friendly interface with a reasonable amount of options, the skill level is basic. The most important step is using compatible settings.Camstudio and Virtualdub
In this video clip, Jimmy Ruska shows you the various features of CamStudio, Virtual Dub and VLC. Virtual Dub and VLC are video editors that you can import your finished CamStudio .avi file into and make changes to it. With these programs, you can alter the file frame by frame and add logos, title screens and various effects and filters.
Step 1: Preparation
Before starting any video project, you need to get organized and have a clear vision of what you want. If you plan to do a series of tutorials, it would be a good idea to draw up at least a loose storyboard to plot out the progression of each clip so that it all runs smoothly. Some questions you need to ask are as follows:- Do you want your logo visible on every frame of the video?
- Will you have a title screen and ending credits?
- Do you want to add visual screen tips?
- If you plan to include audio of your voice, are you clear on what you will say?
- Will there be a soundtrack?
- If you will be using a video editor to alter your clip, what video and audio formats do they require?
- Where do you plan to show the final production, and what are their format and size requirements?
Step 2: Video Settings
According to Jimmy Ruska of JimmyR.com, you shouldn't use the default compression that comes with CamStudio because it will inflate the size of the final file. http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=Kiug3H3c4gk&feature=PlayList&p=D92E04F9B3A2D929&playnext=1&playnext_from=PL&index=35 So, you'll need to download the freely available DivX Codec and install it. After the installation, re-open CamStudio.- Settings:
- Go to the main menu and pick Options -> Video Options.
- Search through the Compressor pull down for DivX and select it.
- Click the Configure button and change bitrate to 256. Save and go back to the video window.
- Uncheck the Auto Adjust checkbox.
- Set key frames every 120 frames.
- Capture frames every 33 milliseconds.
- Playback rate 30 frames/second.
Step 3: Audio Settings
If you plan to record your voice during the capture, Ruska recommends that you install the Lame MP3 audio compressor for better sound compression and smaller file sizes. http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=Kiug3H3c4gk&feature=PlayList&p=D92E04F9B3A2D929&playnext=1&playnext_from=PL&index=35 After you download and install Lame MP3, it should be available inside CamStudio.- Settings:
- Go to the main menu and pick Options -> Audio Options for Microphone.
- Click Choose Compressed Format and pick Lame MP3 or PCM (if you opted not to download the other compressor).
- Make sure that Record Audio From Microphone is checked in the Options menu.
CamStudio
Ruska walks you through the CamStudio menus one by one to show you the most used features. Although the version of CamStudio in this clip is older, many of the menus are the same as the ones in the newest version. However, you should use the DivX codec settings from the top video to get the proper compression versus quality balance.
Step 4: Useful Program Options
Once you have finished with the audio and video settings, you'll need decide on what area of the screen you will want to record. Also, this would be the time to decide whether you will use an .avi or .swf format.- Set the Regions:
- To pick what area you want to capture, you need to go to the Region menu.
- Fullscreen: Use this one if you want to capture everything on your screen.
- Window: Click this option and only the active window on screen is recorded.
- Fixed Region: Choose fixed region when you want to control the size of the captured area by inputting your own width and height.
- Recording:
- To change between .avi and .swf, click the round toggle button on the interface with "SWF" written on it.
- Then, click the red circle to record.
- Once you are finished recording, click the blue square to stop it.
Step 5: Post-Production Programs
Once you have finished your capture, you'll probably want to add extras to your video that will make it more visually interesting or add important information like logos and copyrights. You may even want to spice it up with music and fancy transitions. Below is a list of various programs that you might find useful.Type Web Site Wax* video editor/effects www.debugmode.com/wax Virtual Dub* video editor www.virtualdub.org Adobe Flash .swf file editor www.adobe.com/products/flash Adobe Photoshop image editor www.adobe.com/products/photoshop/photoshop Paint Shop image editor www.corel.com Gimp* image editor www.gimp.org Audacity* music editor audacity.sourceforge.net Adobe Audio Audition music editor www.adobe.com/products/audition Magix Music Maker music editor/mixer www.magix.com/us/music-maker Mixman Studio music editor/mixer www.mixman.com * means the program is free
