When working with onions, there are five tricks to avoiding the tears that often accompany these vegetables:
Using a sharp knife will allow fewer irritants in the cell walls of the onion to be released.
Once you've cut your onion in half, turn the halves down on the cutting board, away from your face.
Chilling the onion prior to preparation will allow less of the irritants inside the onion to evaporate into the air around you.
You can also run the exhaust fan in your kitchen to pull the irritants away from you and your face.c
