Fresh green beans have a different texture than canned or frozen green beans. The best green beans have a crisp-fresh-from-the-garden taste and texture that can only be experienced when local beans are in season. -
Step 1: What You Need to Cook Green Beans
- 1 pound fresh green beans, about 4 cups
- 1 1/4 cups water
- 1 saucepan that will fit the beans and water comfortably
- Paring knife and cutting board (optional)
- Colander
Step 2: How to Prepare Green Beans
- Wash the beans thoroughly, making sure to rinse off all stray leaves and dirt.
- You can either slice off the ends of each bean, or just break them off. discard the ends.
- The beans can either be cooked whole, or you can slice them into pieces, depending on your preference.
Step 3: How to Cook Green Beans
- Bring the water to a boil.
- Add the green beans and return to a boil, then lower the heat to medium-high.
- Cook 5 minutes, and remove a bean to test for doneness.
- If the bean is not cooked enough for your taste, continue boiling for another 2 minutes.
- Drain beans, using the colander.

- Beans can be served plain, with butter, or sprinkled with herbs.

- Combine 2 cups cooked beans with 1 cup sautéd mushrooms , 1/3 cup sour cream, and 2 teaspoons chopped basil
