How to Choose Between Conventional and Organic Eggs

Conventional vs. Organic Eggs

There are about seven different types of eggs you can choose from when you go to the grocery store. The best eggs are hormone free and come from local farmers markets or a Community Supported Agriculture.

  • Conventional eggs: These eggs are mass produced and come from caged chickens fed grain with pesticides, herbicides, fungicides and fertilizers. These birds are more protected from natural elements, disease and predators. Research has shown that conventional eggs have lower levels of shell bacteria than eggs from specialty systems.c
  • Organic eggs: This type of egg is from uncaged chickens given feed that is grown without most conventional pesticides, fungicides, herbicides and commercial fertilizers. These hormone-free eggs are given antibiotics only during an outbreak.c
  • Free-range eggs: These eggs come from uncaged chickens that are permitted to roam freely within a farmyard, shed or chicken coop. Since these hens have access to the outdoors, they can feed on wild plants and insects, which can result in a very small increase in egg protein content.c
  • Cage-free eggs: Cage-free eggs are laid by hens living in indoor floor operations, such as a building, room, barn or poultry house. Egg farmers provide unlimited access to fresh food and water, nest space, perches and litter.c

Did You Know?

  • While it is true that organic egg farmers don't give hens antibiotics or growth hormones, neither do farmers using other egg production systems.c
  • Approximately five percent of eggs in the U.S. come from cage-free systems.c
