Introduction
- Whether you're cooking for 2 or entertaining 30, holiday menu planning can be a challenge. You want to do something unique and special, but want to be sure everyone will enjoy your selections. Start by selecting the main dish and a prime dessert, then fill in the rest of the meal to complement those selections.
-
Step 1: Select a Main Dish
- The main dish will be the focal point of your main, so select that first. Some popular choices are:
- If you are, or will be hosting, vegetarians you'll want to have a meatless main dish as well, such as:
- Quiche
- Pasta primavera
- Vegetable torte
-
Step 2: Select a Dessert
- An Easter dessert can help to decorate the dining room, as well as finish off your meal with style. Think about:
- Easter themed cupcakes
- A cake shaped like the Easter bunny or an Easter basket
- A platter of assorted Easter chocolates
-
-
Step 3: Round out the Meal
- Add in an appetizer and side dishes, and you're all set! When thinking about the menu, consider:
- The size of the crowd. For a large group, you may wanted casual finger foods set out with cocktails; with a small group, a formal appetizer served at the table before the meal might be nice.
- The age of your guests. Toddlers wont do as well with a vichyssoise as they will with a fruit salad.
- Have several substantial side dishes. Not everyone will like everything you prepare, so make sure you have a few substantial side dishes, such as potatoes or pasta based dishes, that picky eaters can fill up on.
- Balance your side dishes, having both sweet and savory, soft and crisp, hot and cold, to add variety.
- If your main dish is complicated, select simple side dishes. If you've selected a basic main dish that doesn't require elaborate prep, you can feature a more involved side dish.
- Consider side dishes than can be made ahead.
- Before finalizing the menu, lay out the timing, to be sure you have enough oven space, stove top burners, and pans for the dishes you're planning. If things don't look like they'll work together, go back and revise the menu.
