How to Cook Bulgur

Introduction

Bulgur wheat is made by boiling and drying whole wheat grains. It is dehydrated, and the cooking process consists of rehydrating it. In order to cook bulgur, you should use a ratio of 2 parts liquid to one part bulgur.

Step 1: What You Need To Cook Bulgur

Feel free to substitute another liquid of your choice for all or part of the water. Try beef or chicken stock, tomato, apple or orange juice, or milk.

Step 2: How to Cook Bulgur

  1. Melt the butter in a saucepan.
  2. Add the bulgur, and stir until coated, cooking for 1-2 minutes.
  3. Pour in the liquid and bring to a boil.
  4. Cover, reduce heat, and simmer for 15 minutes.

Step 3: How to Make Bulgur Pilaf

  1. Saute 1 cup chopped onion in the butter.
  2. Add 1/4 turmeric before adding the bulgur.
  3. Add the bulgur, and stir until coated, cooking for 1-2 minutes.
  4. Add 1/2 cup frozen peas.
  5. Pour in 1 cup of beef stock and bring to a boil.
  6. Cover, reduce heat, and simmer for 15 minutes.
