Introduction
Broccoli is available in grocery stores year round. It's easy to prepare, and can be eaten raw, boiled, steamed, pureed, or stir-fried. Broccoli is frequently served with a sauce, such as hollandaise, and is a good vegetable to use in casseroles. Plan on one pound of broccoli to serve two to three people as a side dish. -
Step 1: How to Prepare Broccoli
- Cut off the end of the stems, and remove the tough outer leaves of the broccoli. Discard or compost the trimmings.
- Cut the broccoli into serving size pieces.
- You can cut the broccoli into small florets, with each piece having a small piece of stem attached.
- You can also cut the broccoli into long spears, with several florets on a larger piece of stem.
- If the stems are very thick and tough, pare the outer skin with a vegetable peeler.
- Wash the broccoli and drain in a colander.
Step 2: How to Boil Broccoli
- Bring a pot of water to a boil.
- Add the broccoli when the water is boiling.
- Boil for 4-8 minutes, depending on how large the broccoli pieces are.
- The broccoli is done when the stems are easily pierced with a sharp knife.
- Drain and serve.
Step 3: How to Steam Broccoli
- Bring water to boil in a pot with a steaming insert just above the water.
- Place the broccoli in the steamer insert.
- Steam for 6-8 minutes, depending on how large the broccoli pieces are.
- The broccoli is done when the stems are easily pierced with a sharp knife.
- Remove from steamer and serve
Step 4: How to Serve Broccoli
- Broccoli can be served plain, or sprinkled with a little lemon juice.
- Toss broccoli with melted butter, if desired.
- Top broccoli with Hollandaise sauce
- Saute 2 cloves of minced garlic in 2 tablespoons of olive oil for 5 minutes, and combine with broccoli for a vegetable that goes well with pasta dishes.
- Puree leftover broccoli with butter, salt, and pepper, and reheat over low heat for a second appearance.
